cadre.
a collaborative project |
Founded in 2003, cadre is an ongoing collaborative project to explore and establish alternative, grassroots methods of support, production, and distribution for the work of contemporary artists. This encompasses everything from curatorial collaborations to our own artistic projects to the cadre art grant. The definition of cadre as “a small group of trained personnel around which a larger organization can be built” was appropriate for what we sought to achieve vis à vis making this intervention in the art world. In 2004 we curated Patriot Acts, a digital exhibition for the California Lawyers for the Arts 30th Anniversary Celebration. We have worked together on similar exhibitions, “coached” a retired elementary school art teacher who wanted to return to her creative practice, and started a grant for visual artists based on a community support model. Through direct e-mailing, websites, and word-of-mouth we solicit $10 donations to give grants to artists, believing that small donations are sustainable and can make a positive, direct change using different models of support. We’ve just completed our first grant cycle during with we distributed nearly $4000.00 in donations to six art projects. |
